  1. I love the original game; one of those repetitive but wonderfully addictive old-schoolers : P. I think the bike would be boatloads of fun, but maybe a bit expensive to set up. The 'running from a mob' idea was great, i really think it'd add a lot more excitement and enthusiasm to the game. Still, I would've liked to see more redone graphics and design cos the old game had such wacky ideas e.g. fireball shooting gargoyles : P.

    D-istinction from me : ).

  2. good presentation and websit ( although a bit plain)i really like the of the bike for this game as it would be hard to picture it in use outside of a racing game, but you did it well. i think adding multiplayer was a good idea plus i like that you have given thought to other aspects of the game such as upgrades, levels and challenges while still keeping the basic elements of the game intact, i also think that having the bike itself change settings(like adding resistance to the pedals for uphill)is a good way to link the player to the game.personally i think although there are many different features in the game play once the player has finished with them..or grows bored of them all they are left with is the same old repetative motion of of riding a bike..(but ofcourse while looking great thanks to all that riding)

so in the end a good game you deserve D FOR DISTINCTION!!!

  3. Good presentation, well delivered.

The feature of changing the resistance on the bike pedals according to what happens in the game (riding up or down hill) is a great way to activate the mind-body loop and get the player invested in the game - well done. You could also extend this feature, and allow players to set the base game difficulty (in terms of pedal resistance) so that players can play to their fitness level. This will prevent those with less than stellar physical fitness from becoming too shagged out (and causing a mind-body conflict).

To increase the performance aspect, maybe you could make it so the speed of the thrown paper is affected by the way you flick the wiimote?

Overall, good game. Loved the drawings of the bullies too.

There's a distinctive style about this game that I like, however having a kind of "Wii-cycle" for one game could take up a bit too much space. Of course, if Wii-Fit endorsed it and made it part of the training program it'd be epic.

Overall, well delievered (lol I see the pun) and presented in good manner.

High end of Distinction (around 75-80%)

  6. Great presentation ... i like this game as for the original version and the well innovated develop version of this paperboy game with more extra features such as pedal and using wii mote to toss the newspaper and of course multiplayer features.

The character customization also works well to this game as players would like to wear/customize their character in different style with extra attribute that helps in game such as extra strength agility and etc.

Lastly, once again the combination of bike pedaling and wii mote works well.

    HD for me

  7. Smooth presentation and its good that this team attempted to bring back old-school style games like Paperboy. The mechanics of the game are indeed simple to perform and comprehend.

The various gameplay aspects, especially hitting or missing a house are well implemented, and the points/ money based scoring system (also based on the colour of houses) works well.

Also, I think the exertion method of using the bike for this game is good, as it would be a good workout. The challenges (like the dogs) and upgrades are great incentives to perform better as well.

The addition of multiplayer is always good, but I think it needs at least one more game modes to enhance the game's longevity. Perhaps if there were specialised obstacles and challenges for multiplayer this issue would be of little concern.

Overall, I think that this game works well and would be easy to have fun with, as the objectives and methods of play are perfectly clear.

Well done. This gets a Distinction+ (almost HD in fact, but not HD due to the lack of more multiplayer options and modes)

  8. My mark: DI
I thought this was a very good virtual adaption to the intense cardio vascular training of riding an exercise bike. It just seems to lack a social aspect to it but I can see that, with respect to the target audience of this game, this might not matter so much.

  9. I like taht you've taken an old game and completely adapted it to new technology and current social behaviours. The physicality of the game is good, points for resistance in the bike and thigs of that nature. Shame about the limit in multiplayer abilities, but a distinction nonetheless.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Physical Exertion
A great looking physical game, with a nice adaptation to a classic exercise bike and use of wii remote.

    Mind Body conflict
Well balanced, particularly with the act of riding a bike mixed with flicking a wii-mote. Challenging on the mind in terms of movement needed with response to colours of houses, etc...

    Mind Body Loop
Extremely good use & take on equipment already available which satisfies the mind.

    Emotion
Looks like lots of fun to play and if the mob catches up, that could set the heart racing.

    Social
Not an overly social game, people can watch & comment I take it? Due to the requirement of both the mind & body to play, I can't see the playing enjoying a social aspect to the game.

    Perfomance
This has been described extremely well in your presentation & on your website.

    Originality
An original take on an old game.

    Style
Some great visual aids were provided in both your presentation & website.

    Presentation
Spoken & put together well with some sweet visual aids.

    Website
Format was okay, not great, let down the fantastic images a bit but it was still quite informative in it's description. Animation & images were descriptive & well done.

  11. Very well done and thought out game- the whole concept seems to cover all of the criteria and adds a new dimension of entertainment to an old idea.
If i had to criticise the game it would be that the bike would take up a tad too much room - have you thought about how it could be transported, not just when it is first bought - but what if a kid wants to bring it to his mates place so they can play multiplayer...
But an alternative to this is developing a version for arcades. This would be far better for the social aspect of the game and multiplayer functionality - imagin a line of say 6 or so bikes... would make for a very interesting game.

  13. You have a lot of information about your game on your site which is very handy. I like how you have used the simple idea of being a kid and riding his bike to deliver newspapers. Having obstacles like the "bully" and "dog chase" i think will help make the game more exciting. I find riding an exercise bike to be a little boring but perhaps playing this game might make it fun. Being able to customize things in the game is a great idea because everyone likes to make their character unique. Overall you get a Distinction

  14. man i loved your game.
Your site is rad and the animations and info provided explain the game perfectly.

I don't really know what to say about it all to be honest, i liked everything about it and i don't want to sit here and write some 300 page novel pointing out every bit of it and how good it was.
Basically; awesome game, awesome characters, quirks (eg. collectibles), its smart that you adapted the game in order to use a bike and the wiimote, very similar to the game play.

Anyone seen lady in the water? i don't know if you guys remember but one character would only work out one side of his body as some sort of weird experiment, i think he should be your poster boy for this game.

  16. I think the game is great dont get me wrong, but im just trying to find negatives...
I think the game may be a bit linear (i get the image of old-school car racing games where you just holdthe button down and move left and right to dodge cars)
Basically what im trying to point out is whether there is any point to pedaling slower. If you just pedal flat out i think you would bet over the game pretty quickly.
Nether the less, everything about the game seems fantastic, i would probably look into buying a game like this if it werent for the pesky expenses that wii peripherals seem to attract :P

PS why do the mob want the paper boy, is it an ethnic issue!?

  17. Pretty swish game. Good presentation, well thought out etc etc.

I liked the quirky characters and customisation stuff. It would keep the player interested and it gives the game some depth.
I was going to criticise the fact that it might get boring delivering papers, but then i remembered the bullies and dogs chasing you. I guess i have no criticisms then.

  18. It's an interesting game. I agreed with Tim that if you just delivery newspapers , It would get boring. To make your game more interesting and attractive, you could make a game is 2players game. You don't have to use another bicycle. You use one but 1st player is driver, other one sits on back and help player1 delivery. And... it could be a non parallel game , right?!!

Good idea, very exertive. But not very social, it would be a good arcade game if you added multiplayer, someone suggested having a friend to throw the papers, while one avoids obstacles on the bike. Well thought out game play. You explained your concept very well. Your website is nicely presented, and the illustrations are cute. OVERALL.

This is a really great concept. I like the idea itself, and also how you have made it a possible reality. I could see people buying and playing this game in their homes.
The idea of revamping a new game sort of disapointed me though, i like originality. However, that being said, it's not really the same piece of crap game that it was. It's very different and the incporation of the WiiMote makes it alot cooler and actually feel like you're delivering papers.
The addition of something chasing you, and of the red and blue houses will make the user think of their feet, which is always nice. Also, the idea of resistance on the bike going up as hills and stuff approach is a good way to mess with the Mind/Body loop and increase exertion.

My only real beef with it is that players may not want to play it again after they've beaten it once. But eh, who plays through games a million times these days anyway?

You should have offered more social stuff. Left4Dead style with two players as dogs peddling after the riders, who have to peddle faster and throw newpapers. If one player gets taken down the other has to do both side of the street.

Not sure about the website and the preso wasn't amazing - just a great originalish and fun looking concept.

The game idea is awesome, you guys have the right mix of visuals and written on your website, and your characters are really cute! The character customization is great, adds that little bit more feeling to the game.

There seems to be a lot of physical exertion to play the game successfully, which would be good for us young people, but I could see older people trying to out ride a dog and failing miserably.

I’m glad you guys chose cycling (not only my favourite sport) but since it’s a non-impact cardio exercise I don’t see any forms of injury happening, other than adjusting the seat.

Overall a great game, I’m looking forward to seeing it in stores soon! :D

  26. Ned here.

    Paperboy, that brings back memories.

I think that the game would work beautifully as an arcade game. People would be unlikely to pay the requisite cost for the peripheral to use at home, I think.

I think most games can be summed up by the moments when you are most involved with the world, when the 'flow' remains unbroken.

I can imagine doing a sprint on one of the final levels, mob breathing down my neck (fan add-on?), with one more paper to deliver.
With the last ounce of my strength, I send a paper sailing gracefully over the wrought iron fence of the mansion at the end of the road like a deadly headlined albatross.
I smirk with satisfaction as it hurtles through the the window and pierces the priceless Ming vase so ostentatiously displayed.
I thrust my fists into the air and throw my hair back as the new high score music roars through my speakers:

    "You're the best! The BE-EEST!"

    Yeah. Awesome.

  29. Interesting idea. You definitely got the exertion bit down. My suggestion to make it more interesting and have longer lasting appeal if it was made into an actual game(to me anyway) is have really funny ass animations when you hit someone or something with your paper or if you get brutalized. Also add some kind of taunt. I was thinking about team fortress 2 how the taunt never gets old and players randomly do it on and off which makes the game a tad bit interesting every now and then

I'm going to give you 8/10, which is a a HD.

  32. This game sounds very exciting and I would love to play it! A great reinvention of Paperboy with a physically exerting interface.

    Physical Exertion
Cycling is a great way to get physical, mainly for the legs, especially on a stationary bike. The addition of having to throw papers with the wiimote creates some physicality for the arms. A great all round approach to exertion.

    Mind Body conflict
A great set of different gameplay mechanics to add to the mind body conflict. Riding the bike and aiming the newspapers wouldn’t be to mentally taxing, and would make great introductory gameplay. The addition of being chased and increased physical demands with the hills would make for challenging conflict. The directed aiming of the paper to windows etc would probably be the first mechanic to suffer from an overly taxing mind/body conflict.

    Social
The online aspect makes this game interesting socially, but a game like this could stand to have players in the same room, but is hard because of space concerns. Multiple players taking turns and barracking each other on their turns would work well with this game.

    Emotion
Taking some older kids back to their child hood paper runs would get them emotionally invested in this game. Competiting against others, or playing the game socially would raise the intensity of emotions.

    Perfomance
I’m really not sure what performance aspects are here. Aiming at the houses, and cycling are fairly standard physical aspects of the game. Maybe if you could incorporate throwing the paper behind your head, or popping wheelies for bonus points?

    Originality
Using a retro concept, this game expands into the physical world with exergaming. Originality in the gameplay such as being able to get upgrades and distract dogs etc. add to the originality.

    Style
Some thought has gone into the visual style of the game, but I would like to see more on the website depicting a more developed concept of the game.

    Presentation
The presentation was very good, straight forward, and managed to get all the points across. Use of visuals to reinforce the message was great.

    Website
The website was informative, covering the aspects of the game, visual style, player interface etc.

  34. i love this idea! the paperboy factor is partial in it's appeal, but use of a bike a controller is damm irresistible, you may lack originally by revamping paper boy but the new of game play added with the bike makes up for that. You would definitely need a bike that simulates resistance (up hill movement & etc) & adding to what Ned said ,, the bike would have to be relatively cheap so cost doesn't distract from it's appeal. On the physical side of things it sounds very fun & since it's a bike there would be little learning curve for most people, & the bike sells the fantasy & the idea of performance quite naturally.!

Your idea is very original and I like how you got a simple and sometimes mundane job, and turned it into a game.
It did lack a bit of a social aspect, but it could easily be solved with the implementation of other bikes and possibly, two sided teams - that is half the players trying to deliver the papers and the other half trying to prevent them from doing so?

You're site outlines all the aspects of your game to a great extent. Well done!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey guys :) I'm so sorry, I had this really nice long post and my internet browser decided to die :/ I didn't have a chance to copy it either :/

    I gave your game a D.

Having a bike idea is great! The only downfall would be, as people have already pointed out, the size. Especially if you're in Japan, where most people have limited room space.

An alternative to that would be to shrink the size so it's only the handle, seat and pedals, and possibly light-weight too. Or you could carry it from the home environment to the arcade scene.

If you did shift it to the arcade, you could have multiple bikes (as some people have pointed out) and additionally have another seat on the bike for another player to throw the papers (if you ever wanted that, of course).

There's lots of physical activity going on, leg muscles, arm muscles, brilliant. But it doesn't seem social enough unless you have cooperative or versus mode with more than one bike.

That's about it ^^ Website is good and has nice information and images.

    Keep it up :)

  40. Cool concept and it is another example of a game that would exert the crap out of you. If done well thought this could be an equally fun game, that would make people want to exercise. 41. IF YOU CANT BE BOTHERED READING ALL THIS. I GAVE THIS A MARK OF:
    - HD

i think out of all the games this was probably the most original idea and i could see myself playing it.
The aspects of the mob chasing you and you're not just riding around destroying houses was good.
As the game has a point to it and it makes sure that the player will have a high level of exertion (because of the angry mob).

I think if this game was made it would be awesome and a lot of people would play it at the arcade.
However for at home it may not be so easy.
Unless Wii released an exercise bike & you didn't have to release this yourselves(which they probably will eventually) hahaha

Overall I think the level of exertion is great,
    the fun of it great,
    the concept great.
    So I can't see why I wouldn't give you a HD.

    Some ideas:
Make your mob & player customizable,
so it varies for different age groups,
    Kids have bullies chasing them,
Old people have other old people chasing them(maybe retirement village workers haha),
    Teens have the cops,
and htne you could do retarded versions like
Being chased by zombies or stuff like that.
And you're throwing heads and crap through the windows.
or like special pick ups. (bricks, rocks, etc.etc.)

but i spose u dont have to worry bout it anymore as the assignment is over hahaha

  42. Brilliant idea, thought it was A+ even in the beginning stages (i.e. the Madness session). Super physically exerting and makes exercise fun: the ideal exergame, in my opinion!

I also think the main point of awesome lies in the fact that the amount of fun to be had wouldn't differ much at all between multiplayer and single player modes. It'd be great to play either way, and you'd get an epic workout each time.

I bestow upon you a HD.

I liked this one. It seems fun, hard work, but fun. As long as the person playing is enjoying themselves then its fantastic but as soon as they think its just hard work on a bike, then not so good. Presentation, website, understanding, all of which are good. I would definitely give this game a try. The only thing im worried about is that dam Wee remote, as its been said before in other classes… It sucks…ok it’s not that bad. In the end as long as it is accurate when it comes to throwing the papers then the game is gr8. Well done on a good game.

  51. I really loved the idea of this game. It excites me through the everydayness of a paperboy but being made into some sort of hero. The way that physicality is brought into this through wiimote emulating the action of throwing a paper is good. But what is great is that you took that and didn't just stop there. That was an okay game, a game i could play and be like "hee hee! i'm a paper boy" *tries to hit the cat lazing on the front step of the house* But you took it to the next level and added in an exercise bike!! Now this really takes your workout to another level and also tests your aim with the newspaper.
I would have loved to have seen some variation in the game’s gameplay so as to try and keep it fresh and mixed up for the player. Maybe a minigame along the lines of Big Buck Hunter and those sorts of shooting games except you have to hit things with your newspaper.

But a great game concept nevertheless, kudos to all.
