Nice lecture! I liked how it was really interactive,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tom, we should have played the Wii! There is always a next time...hint hint...
The assignment sounds fun also!
Maths and Physics looks like it will be a very fun and interactive learning experience.
Cheers,
Carla Bonanno :)
It was a very loud and lively lecture today unlike our previous classes - which is a good change for everyone :)
ReplyDeleteWhen you asked us to demonstrate some kind of physical activity - you'd told us to "stand up and do something" so I suppose everyone's intention was to get up and move their limbs around with somebody until the time is over, haha... overall, I agree with Nikki when we react with physical activity because of past school experience such as 'physical education'.
~ Bao Di :3
I loved the lecture. It was a great change in that it was ORGONISED (Unlike previous lectures) and very lively, involving everyone. I look forward to the rest of the semester :)
ReplyDelete"What is physical gaming?"
I think we all made it a little too complicated. I think we all associate "Physical Gaming" with the absence of technology. Simple as that. I guess you have systems like the wii that try to bind the fine borders of what is physical and what is virtual. However, to me, that's not physical gaming. I think it really needs to be based around not using technology, hence why its PHYSICAL gaming. Gaming itself can be either. It's virtual gaming when the physics and gaming is emulated using technology.
- Benny Head (The Giant)
Hey Benny... the absence of technology is not a very good description of physical gaming. Everything that's artificially manufactured is technology. A ball for instance is technology.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it was a very engaging lecture. I'm not sure that I gained gained much of an insight into maths or physics though.

In terms of the lecture itself, i really enjoyed the interactivity of it, and nice work Floyd on somehow making it work with 70 odd people.
ReplyDeleteIt seems the basis of lecture revolved slightly around whether the "Hug At A Distance" was actually what the public wanted. And revolved a little more around what is "Physical Gaming".
In terms of "Hug At A Distance"(HAD), I had a fair bit of trouble understanding just why someone would realistically want such a thing. Yeah, it was beautiful in its sentimentality. But when it boils down, it's another way of saying i'm "thinking of you" and expressing it through a technological outlet. There are a few other things that do this, these being:
Telephone, Email, SMS, written letters, couriered roses and having an aeroplane write sweet nothings in smoke to name a few.
Marketing wise, well, it was never meant to be a product for the masses (i think). So it's not really an issue. But considering the grant to create this thing was probably somewhere between $5000 and $20 000, it probably isn't that affordable to the average family.
OK so the HAT is an instantaneous form of expression and all it is supposed to represent is ones emotion to another, which i guess to a certain extent it does. But there are that many different ways of doing this already, i don't think in terms of technology that we need another at this point. Maybe when holograms or some such are invented then yeah sure, knock yourself out. In the mean time, maybe just hug a pillow.
So, whats physical gaming? When we were told to stand up and do something physical, yes, we all moved.
Someone mentioned this being due to popular culture, and in my opinion it hits the nail on the head pretty succinctly.
After say 1995, which was the release of ID's "Doom" on PC - when digital games first really came apparent to the general media) and before 8/12/2006 (The release of the Wii in its major markets).
If someone said i play games, most people would assume it was a computer game.
If someone said i play physical games, most people would probably think it's something to do with physical theatre and stage play.
And thats pretty much how contemporary culture had defined the two ideas.
Now, we had a little class discussion about whats physical, and whats gaming. The end result being that it was physical if more action occurred in real life rather than within the media system. And it was a game if it had rules.
Enter the Wii. And here is where having it set up in our lecture theatre, it made a really nice point. The Wii, which has an equal amount of physical and digital action is sort of the epitome of physical gaming. Unless you bring games like billiards or foosball into it...because they're games...and not sports...and they're physical...
But to summarise there it is,
Wii == Physical Gaming
Ben
Floyd, all I have to say is WOW! and well done.
ReplyDeleteYour teaching style is a huge improvement on the one we have previously been experiencing to this year in Maths and Physics.
I enjoyed your lecture, especially with the amount of interactivity you had with us. It was less clinical to other lectures where you are a student among a plethora of other students all learning the same thing; we are considered individuals with names rather than student numbers, which I think allows us to feel more involved. The lecture itself was enjoyable, mentally stimulating and it kept me interested. It wasn't one of those lectures where the lecturer has a monotone voice and you are either zoning in and out thinking about other things or counting down the minutes until the lecture ends.
Asking us to define the term "physical gaming" made me think outside the square and not just at the obvious. I was thinking it involves action, movement... and then through the group discussion I began to think "how would this relate to physics?" And then it became apparent to me, how to define physical gaming. It was, in a sense, a challenge to develop a new and more insightful way of approaching normal everyday things with a physics and/or mathematical mindset.
I now look forward to maths and physics :)

ReplyDeleteCan we please have a marking and submission outline for the assessment involving groups of 5, designing our physical game. You're telling us to get started and so forth but we have no dates of submission or anything like that.

Ben
Hi Ben,
ReplyDeleteYour task is to present a physical game idea in class.
It may help to use concepts you learned on class to justify and explain your design, but really it is up to you to demonstrate that your idea is the most innovative/thoughtful/engaging (you pick your aim, too).I can say some more about it in next class, I understand it is tough after only 1 h of discussion.
The deadline works as follows: when you enter your team, you also enter when you present: on the schedule page, there are time slots for each team (A, B, ...), so first in, first serve. Until next lecture, you should focus on trying to get your group together and do the rest of the homework.
Cheers,
Floyd
Floyd,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, i must be missing something obvious.
The deadline you outlined is for the "groups" of 8 which i understand are presented depending on which topic we choose.
I'm inquiring about the "teams" of 5 assessment involving the web page. When is this presented/due?
On the last 3 lectures, look for team A, B,C,...

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'm just commenting on the lecture last thursday on the 16th of april.
I thought it was a great lecture and the way you engage the students is great as it gets everyone involved and apart of the conversation, which is really important as in a lot of lectures, the students don't get to do much talking.
On the topic that was presented in the lecture defining a "Physical Game" I thought the fact that we couldn't even come to a conclusion was funny, in the sense that when you say "let's play a physical game" in real life, people do it straight away and don't run away to an xbox. But when you try and analyze it, its a much more in depth conversation and no one really knows the answer. I think the closest we got was saying that the result was in the real world, where as in virtual games the result is inside the virtual world.
Anyways very interesting lecture other than that,
and I'm sure it's had everyone thinking about games more(which is what we really want from uni isn't it?)

Hi Floyd, its michele here. I would really like to present on the wii. It is the topic that appeals to me the most. The problem is i just transferred into the course and only know one person. I think a lot of students are in the same boat and dont know many other students. I think teams should be constructed inside of class with your assistance. It would be much easier to select a group once everyone is together/ we can see who is remaining. Then it just becomes an issue of deliberating the workload. I will try my best to get a group organized before then but i think it will have to wait until thursday.
Thank you.
Bugger the lecture content, I just like the accent.

Yo, Bec here. I am finding it really hard to define, 'physical games' , because the word physical, tends to mean actually doing something physical, for example playing sport like netball. So when we were asked to 'play' a physical game. We assume straight away we are being asked to do something physical involving strength or fitness. Also involving more than one person, to compete with.
ReplyDeleteIt's also more about win/lose situations and rules. We can argue for example a board game, is not a physical game, because it's not really in a sense, physical. Yes, we can be really picky about saying how our eyes move, or how we throw the dice with our hands.
I don't think we can define physical games, as a whole. There are many definitions that describe each different type of game play. I'm sure we can discuss for hours what these are..
I really enjoyed thursday's class. I thought it was a good opportunity to discuss things most of us haven't had a chance to even think about. Got me thinking for sure!

ReplyDeleteMy comments on last weeks lecture.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed you presentation techniques and class involvement. Peer review and comments always help to create a great environment for learning and going beyond the basics of just passing the class.
The idea of extending physicality in games to more tactile experiences is an interesting one, and might be to many of us weird at first. But as was mentioned in last weeks lecture, I think this could be due more to our culture and what we are used to in gaming. The same can definitely be said about the virtual hugs.
I think that the virtual hug is a great look into what could be and maybe even should be done to make long distance electronic relationships better. Not necessarily relationships of the sexual kind, I'm talking about friends and family too. It would be great to have that extra physical interaction with out loved ones and I do believe there is a possible market for these types of devices.
Whilst last weeks lecture was thoroughly enjoyable, as has been noted in other peoples comments, I am not sure that it is really fitting the learning outcomes as originally described in the Maths and Physics course overview. This is not a negative attack on the course or what we are learning, as what we have been, and are to learn is very useful information and valuable to our career pathways and I am looking forward to future lectures.
Just thought I'd put forward that it's a bit... different: http://www.rmit.edu.au/courses/037017

Hi this is Rhiannon again, just updating my 5 person team (team H). Please replace Kieran Wallace with Daniel Angelone, as Kieran already had a 5 person team.
ReplyDeleteCheers
I didn't have anything to say about the first lecture.
ReplyDeleteAbout the second lecture:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/david_perry_on_videogames.html
Towards the end of this talk, the guy shows a video made by a student (I think) that is all about how he has become emotionally addicted to games, not because of the wii-mote, but because the game itself (graphics, story, visual effects and sounds/music) create an emotional connection that fully emerses him into a game. If only I'd this before our talk, it would have been even better.
And for the group doing the talk about wii-mote hacks:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/johnny_lee_demos_wii_remote_hacks.html
i am now in group 12

@Ben:
ReplyDeletePretty sure Kin had K first, found that out after trying to claim it myself... can we get a list of the remaining available letters please Floyd?
I give up -_-
ReplyDelete@all the teams without letter: you need to do the same that I do: go through the other teams and see which letter has not been taken yet and pick one. The letter determines when you demonstrate your project.
ReplyDeleteWithout one, your team is not complete!
These comments haven't seemed to be a very productive way of organising team letter assignments.
ReplyDeleteFloyd, maybe you could make a post with all the letter assignments in it, and update it as everyone comments on that post to claim there number? Or randomly assign them to each team?
ie:
Team Post
Team A:
Blah
Blah
...
Team B:
Blah
Blah
Team C:
Not claimed
...
etc.
Then update it as people claim numbers?
Or perhaps everyone should be posting "Team X" where X = the letter so Ctrl + F actually finds it and we know it already taken.
ReplyDeleteAlso the rediculous change with one group changing three times confused the hell out'a me; so provided it's available:
Team P:
Scott Battye
Mariah LeRoy
David Biro
Mick Brennan
Robert Shea
Which I guess it's not which is the reason the group changed it to O...
ReplyDeleteLet's try this one:
Team G:
Scott Battye
Mariah LeRoy
David Biro
Mick Brennan
Robert Shea
And again, at a quick glance Team G didn't show up but is taken... -_-
ReplyDeleteWe're claiming Team J, I've ran two searches and the only one that showed was J as in Jam and they've changed it to O. So it's ours now.
And don't anyone say otherwise or they can GTFO for not doin' it right...
Team J:
Scott Battye
Mariah LeRoy
David Biro
Mick Brennan
Robert Shea
@Everyone: there are still a few groups without letters and a few with letters already taken, please correct.
ReplyDeleteEspecially Ben, Rachael, your letters are taken I can see straight away.
I'll post a complete list, I've added bogus letters for groups that do not have one (e.g. X, Y ...)
Please make sure you are in the right group, it is essential for you that it is clear who presents when! (Your project should be well underway by now..)

@Ben, the letter in front of each persons name is the group they're in; if they have "X", "Y", "Z" etc. or no letter at all, then they don't have a team or team letter yet. At least, that's my understanding of it :P
ReplyDeleteI think, looking at that list, B, C, D, and E are available :), I thought A was taken already, not sure about that one.
